Bank Security
At Bunyoro Finance Bank, protecting your financial information and personal data is not just a technical necessity — it’s a core part of our promise to you. We take the security of your money, identity, and transactions seriously by implementing world-class security systems and promoting strong customer awareness.
This page explains how we safeguard your assets, what you can do to protect yourself, and how we’re working together to prevent fraud and digital threats.
1. Our Commitment to Bank Security
We operate under a strict security policy and compliance framework governed by:
- The Bank of Uganda’s regulatory standards
- The Uganda National Information Security Framework
- International data protection standards (ISO 27001, PCI-DSS)
- Our internal cybersecurity and risk control systems
Security is not a one-time project — it’s a continuous, evolving effort. That’s why we:
- Monitor all systems 24/7 through a Security Operations Centre (SOC)
- Update and patch systems regularly
- Train all employees in cybersecurity best practices
- Run internal audits, penetration tests, and simulations quarterly
2. How We Protect You
Here are the key measures we use to keep your money and information safe.
2.1. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
To access e-banking and mobile banking platforms, we enforce MFA protocols such as:
- One-Time Passwords (OTP) sent via SMS or app
- Secret security questions
- Biometric authentication (face/fingerprint recognition in our app)
These add extra layers of protection in case your password is compromised.
2.2. End-to-End Data Encryption
All information transferred between you and the bank — including login credentials, account information, and transactions — is protected by 256-bit SSL encryption. This ensures data is unreadable to third parties in transit.
2.3. Secure Login Environments
- Our website uses HTTPS security with up-to-date TLS certificates
- Our mobile app runs in a protected sandboxed environment
- Login sessions expire automatically after a period of inactivity
We never store sensitive login credentials on your device.
2.4. Transaction Monitoring & AI Threat Detection
Our fraud detection system uses artificial intelligence and real-time analytics to:
- Flag suspicious logins or transactions (e.g., large withdrawals, unusual IP addresses)
- Block or delay transactions pending verification
- Notify customers instantly of any risky activity
2.5. Secure ATM & POS Infrastructure
All our ATMs and POS systems are protected by:
- Anti-skimming devices
- Tamper-resistant PIN pads
- Surveillance and alarm integration
- Real-time communication with our fraud detection unit
3. Customer Security Responsibilities
While we protect your account through technology, your cooperation is essential in maintaining a secure banking relationship.
Here’s what you should always do:
3.1. Protect Your PINs and Passwords
- Never share your ATM PIN, online banking password, or OTP with anyone — not even bank staff.
- Choose strong, unique passwords that are hard to guess.
- Change your passwords regularly (at least every 3 months).
Never write down your passwords or store them in unprotected files or notes.
3.2. Monitor Your Accounts
- Regularly check your transaction history through our mobile or online banking platforms.
- Set up SMS/email alerts to monitor activity on your account.
- Immediately report any suspicious or unauthorized transaction.
3.3. Use Trusted Devices
- Only access e-banking or mobile banking from devices you trust.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi to log in to your bank account.
- Install antivirus and anti-malware software on your phone or computer.
3.4. Be Alert to Phishing & Scams
Fraudsters often impersonate banks to trick you into giving up your information. Watch out for:
- Emails or SMS claiming “urgent action required”
- Phone calls pretending to be from “Bunyoro Finance Bank Support”
- Fake websites that look like ours but have strange URLs
4. Common Types of Fraud & How to Avoid Them
Knowing the types of fraud you might encounter helps you stay prepared. Here are the most common ones:
4.1. Phishing
Fraudsters send fake emails or messages that appear to be from the bank to collect sensitive information. These messages may contain links to fake websites that mimic ours.
✅ What to do:
- Never click links in unsolicited messages
- Always check the sender’s email address
- Visit our website by typing the correct URL directly
4.2. SIM Swap Fraud
A fraudster tricks your mobile provider into giving them control of your phone number. They can then intercept OTPs or verification messages.
✅ What to do:
- Enable SIM lock on your phone
- Set up PIN or biometric security with your mobile provider
- Inform the bank immediately if your line suddenly stops working
4.3. ATM Card Skimming
Devices attached to ATM machines copy your card information. Criminals then clone your card and use it for unauthorized transactions.
✅ What to do:
- Inspect the ATM before inserting your card
- Shield your PIN entry with your hand
- Use ATMs in well-lit, monitored areas
4.4. Fake Investment & Loan Scams
You may be approached with offers for extremely low-interest loans or high-return investments “on behalf of the bank.”
✅ What to do:
- Deal only with official Bunyoro Finance Bank representatives
- Never pay an “application fee” to a personal mobile number
- Verify offers through our official channels
5. Mobile Banking Security
The Bunyoro Finance Bank app uses the latest mobile security features:
- Encrypted app communication (SSL/TLS)
- Session timeout after inactivity
- Face ID and fingerprint login
- App-level PIN lock
Security Tips:
- Always update to the latest version of our app
- Do not jailbreak or root your mobile device
- Log out after completing your banking session
6. Digital Banking Do’s & Don’ts
| Do’s | Don’ts |
|---|---|
| Use strong, unique passwords | Never share OTPs or passwords |
| Install antivirus on all devices | Don’t log in via links sent on social media |
| Verify URLs before entering account details | Avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking |
| Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) | Don’t ignore suspicious login notifications |
